1. What are some of the key lessons that you have taken from 1 Samuel? Which characters stood out to you the most? Which did you identify with the most? What is it about their stories that connected with you? How can you put the lessons learned to good use in your life?
2. Two big themes from 1 Samuel, promise and providence, play into this passage. For the Israelites, they meant disaster; for the Philistines, victory. How does this story help you to see the complex working of God? How do stories like this one shape the way in which you deal with both success and defeat?
